Quick Info
Durkan Irongut, is the elderly father of Kaigan and Fayna. He is a veteran of 1st and 2nd wars, but more importantly, he has experienced a great deal of history in his life.
His earliest, and greatest exploits begin during the Dwarven civil war. A year later, he would define himself as a great warrior, during the War of Three Hammers. He escaped the catastrophe at Thaurissan, but was left badly traumatized, and his hair and whiskers quickly went grey. Thankfully, his regiment was far from Ironforge, and wasn't there to see the exodus of the Wildhammer Clan.
Back in Ironforge, Durkan would become a renown Jewelcrafter, and soon the new Bronzebeard throneroom, would be filled with Durkan's work. It's this same work, that would eventually bring a young Fayna Silvershale. Fayna was immediately impressed by the skill of his art. Soon, she and Durkan were courting. Fayna's family, the Silvershale clan, were famous miners, legends even go so far as to say, that a Silvershale can smell the richest of veins. They had recently moved to the new colony of Thelsamar, on the shores of Loch Modan. They were impressed with Durkan, and approved strongly of the courtship. Within a few year, Durkan and Fayna were married, and moved to Thelsamar to be closer to Fayna's family.
The couple were soon blessed with the birth of their first child, a son they named Kaigan. Kaigan proved to be a rebel from his father, and had no care for his Durkan's jewelcrafting art. Instead he had his maternal clan's mining instinct. Upon reaching his majority, Kaigan went north, the Silvershale instinct, telling him that there was something big to be found. Sure enough, he eventually found a large vein of silver and set about claiming the rights for his family, a joint claim of the Silvershale and Irongut families. The new mine was named Silver Stream for the vein's shape and path.
The Irongut clan would soon be hit with a terrible tragedy. Fayna became pregnant, and eventually gave birth to Kaigan's sister. However, the birth was hard and she died soon after delivery. Kaigan and Durkan were hit hard by this event, and Durkan determined to honor his wife. He named his baby daughter, Fayna. With Fayna (I) dead, Durkan's heart was too broken to remain in Thelsamar, near his in-laws. With Kaigan and Fayna in tow, he moved back to Ironforge, and set up shop in the commons. Once Durkan and Fayna were settled, Kaigan would eventually return to Thelsmar to continue working at the mine; this soon became a contention between father and son, but Kaigan refused to cut his ties to his mother's clan.
When the Orcs attacked the human kingdom of Stormwind, the Ironforge quickly mobilized it's forces in preperation for an invasion. Kaigan returned to Ironforge and joined the guard. As fate would have it, he would join a regiment commanded by a former comrade of Durkan's. Upon hearing of the exploits of his father, Kaigan confronted Durkan. Durkan, after two centuries, was still traumatized by the rise of Ragnaros, and wanted nothing to do with the guard. When Stormwind fell to the Orcs, the guard marched for the Searing Gorge gate and prepared for imminent invasion. However, Kaigan's regiment would never see the orcs, as they were soon embroiled in battle against a massive invasion by Troggs.
Led by an immense Trogg called, Grawmug, the Troggs quickly aimed for the nearest civilization, Thelsamar. Seeing his mother's clan in danger, Kaigan, by then a Sergeant in the guard, led his squad in an emergency defense of Thelsamar. Badly outnumbered, Kaigan's squad fought like madmen, and were able to hold off the invasion force until a reinforcements from Dun Algaz were able to arrive. The invasion force was routed, but not before Kaigan suffered a serious wound. With the Troggs in retreat, the regiment was able to rally, and Kaigan was stabilized and sent to Ironforge to recuperate.
Upon seeing his wounded son, and hearing of his valor at Thelsmar to protect his mother's clan, Durkan was moved to action. He rejoined the guard, and went to South Gate. Though the Orcs were never given the chance to move north, Durkan was still busy, helping with the repair of Thelsamar.
During the 2nd war, both Kaigan and Durkan would travel across the northern sea to Lordaeron and to the defense of the newly formed Alliance. When the war was over, Kaigan expressed his decision to join the Knights of the Silver Hand. Durkan felt that he was abandoning his clan and race, and the two would soon enter into a great fight that would reverberate through the halls of Ironforge. When all was said and done, Kaigan left for Stormwind, and Durkan returned to Ironforge, retired from the guard, and returned to jewelcrafting.
Since then, the two have barely had any other words with each other. Though Kaigan moved back to Ironforge after completeing his training, he moved to the other side of the city. To avoid his father, he quickly busied himself with the evangelization of the Knighthood, and travelled all over the Alliance. He maintained contact with his sister through secret letters.
Durkan is incredibly gruff (even by Dwarven standards). His son's "betrayal" has developed a strong feeling of xenophobia towards the other races of the Alliance. His face appears to be set in a permenant scowl, and nothing that Kaigan does impresses him. Durkan joined the Order of the Tankard, only through the constant coersion of Fayna, but when she was given the beginning rank of Water-Lover, Durkan began hunting all over the Alliance for Kaigan, determined to give his wayward son a thorough arse-kicking. Along the way, Deric the Generic Cleric ended up crossing paths with Durkan, and is now completely terrified of the ancient dwarf.
